Bubba

2012 - 2026

He had the biggest cutest eyes, silkiest fur we’d have ever felt, beautiful black and tan speckles wherever he had white (our favorite part). When he was still young and agile he loved to climb to the top of our couch cushions and perch there. The majority of all the couches we’ve owned had indents on all of them, something we’ll miss seeing dearly.

For those familiar with hounds, they don’t bark they “bay” (it’s much louder and longer)—he was so sweet and gentle he’d only ever do it when you asked him to... Except the past year or so. As he got older he got more feisty about his dinner. We attempted retraining him to settle while we put his food together but man was he just so excited about it. He’d bay at us the whole time to hurry up. A battle we never won, well played Bubba.

He appreciated his space, but he would so lovingly tolerate us smothering him all the time. We couldn’t help it, I think he knew that.

He was a comfort king. He knew exactly how to leverage a pillow perfectly, and had to have a blanket at all times to nest under. We’ll never forget one winter in New York we were trying to find our couch blankets and when we looked over at his bed he had confiscated both of ours, totaling four in his bed. He kept them all, obviously.

When Sara started working from home, he’d spend the whole day with her while she was in the office. He had an extra bed under the desk and whenever he “clocked in” late she’d always give him guff about it. She was just so grateful to have his company in there. Best office manager a girl could ask for.

We had to be creative with him since he never cared to play with any toys—we started a game with him we called “chicken” (ironically, also his favorite food in the world) where we would toss some treats all over our yard like chicken feed for him to sniff out and find. He loved it so much. It combined his is two favorite past times: sniffing and eating.

Most importantly, he enjoyed his walks—and by walks we mean taking 3 steps and then standing there sniffing for as long as you could bear it. We have resolved that he was onto something, we are going to walk slower and enjoy more everywhere we go. He has given us so much that we will hold onto forever—including this lesson: in a life full of mustangs, take it slow, be a beagle.

We love you so much Bubba, thank you for everything 💛
